An ORACLE ( the medium by which GOD revealed his purpose) worn by the High Priest. The breastplate had TWELVE STONES on which THE NAMES OF GOD and of the TWELVE TRIBES were engraved. Answers were conveyed to the questions formulated by the High Priest in relation to the welfare of GOD's people. The medium through which GOD revealed His Purpose was regarded as an infallible wise prophet, judge or adviser. Otherwise, the unclean person was killed just on the spot, because they weren't able to sustain the power of GOD's SPIRIT.
In the BOOK of EXODUS, we can lecture ourselves about how this magical/mystical force worked.
EXODUS : chapters 1-19 Moses is born; Moses sent to DELIVER ISRAEL (spiritual force to domain the flesh power in Jacob); GOD's message to PHARAOH (the world power receive warnings from GOD before the spiritual forces come into action); the rod is turned into a serpent (authority over the world's power becomes a destructive sword); The Ten Plagues (self-destruction); Israelites leave EGYPT (spiritual Israel is redeemed); Pass through the Red Sea (spiritual Israel is tested through the journey in this world).
chapters 20-40 The Ten Commandments (ordinances, statutes and commandments are being settled among the people of Israel to maintain a clear communication with GOD); The tabernacle (GOD's House); The burnt offering (purification); The priesthood (GOD's chosen ones to represent the people before Him); The Golden Calf (idolatrous Israel, turning themselves to the service of the world's power).
Exodus 28 : 1) AARON and HIS SONS are SET APART for the PRIEST'S OFFICE. 6) The EPHOD. 30) The URIM and THUMMIN. 40) The GARMENTS for AARON'S SONS.
